Our approach to the environment
Digital and remote working by default
All of our team members work remotely. We work with clients remotely by default unless there is reason not to. We do not maintain an office space, minimising travel, energy and water use.
Trains not planes
Wherever possible we travel by train, including between the UK/France. As a small business this has cost implications but also ensures that we only travel when necessary.
Using technology responsibly
It takes a lot of material resources, energy and water to manufacture equipment and run data centres. We therefore:
- use energy efficient computers, maintaining them for as long as possible before replacement
- purchase reconditioned equipment where possible
- disable AI features by default
- where a Large Language Model (LLM) might help, we try to run it locally
- where reliable operational data is available, we attempt to design and build software that minimises energy consumption
moving towards net-zero
We consider the environment integral to our innovation process. Taking environmental impact into account when building software not only helps the planet but can cut costs, increase the longevity of solutions, make websites or apps much quicker and improve operational efficiency.
Our development experience includes early work on portable, low-power systems through early mobile web sites to present-day distributed, serverless architectures. This experience helps us develop energy-efficient systems that cost less to run while providing a faster user experience.
Achieving net-zero for many companies is a transformation process, be it improving a building’s EPC, the electrification of systems (heating, transport), considering supply chains, or creating a local area energy plan. Such changes involve collaboration, digital as well as physical transformation, and require reliable data to inform timely decision making.
Repair, reuse, recycle
We repair, reuse and recycle where we can (not just at work). Such as taking a zero-waste approach to gardening and volunteering at local Repair Cafes – this work recently featured in the 2025 short film ‘The Magic of Mending‘.
